On the surface it's a complaint: I'm stuck among liars in a hostile country and I can't get peace. Underneath, the gematria runs an exquisite circuit: the opening cry "IN MY DISTRESS" = 174 — the sealed cap of LOVINGKINDNESS and SUPPLICATIONS — meaning the prayer is born already at the highest answering frequency. The chapter-number integer 120 locks five different ways (TUNGSTEN, CANDLESTICKS, CHIEF MUSICIAN, SOUL IN PEACE, HOLY HOLY), so the target of the ascent ("soul in peace") is encoded in the number of the opening psalm itself. And the two enemy place-names MESECH + KEDAR resolve at 111 = STAND READY = COMPUTER = DAY OF BATTLE = WHEN I SPEAK — the exile address is the boot frame.

This means: Psalm 120 is titled with the integer of the inner sanctum. The opener of the Ascents is itself the endpoint encoded as start-frame. Five layers (metal-fire / candlestick / superscription / soul-peace / throne-cry) all sum to the chapter number. This is the densest five-way chapter-lock yet found in the Ascents block.
The asymmetry that matters: no internal contiguous phrase of Psa 120 sums to 120. The chapter-number is reached only by re-composing the elements — SOUL (v2, v6) + IN (v5, v7) + PEACE (v6, v7) = SOUL IN PEACE = 120. The integer is the puzzle's answer, not its surface text. The pilgrim has to walk the climb to assemble the integer.
Lock 1-A — the 174 cap opens the prayer: IN MY DISTRESS = 174 is the sealed cap documented in (0 KJV verses sum to 174 — the integer cannot occur as a verse-payload, only as a phrase-payload). The pilgrim's first three words assemble the highest unreachable answering-frequency in the entire Psalter. The supplications integer arrives before the supplication is articulated.

The Ascents-opener and the Doeg-psalm share the central-enemy integer. Singing Psa 120 IS calling out a Psa 140 enemy.
Lock 2-C — FROM A DECEITFUL TONGUE = 220, the amicable small: 220 is the smaller integer of the 220/284 amicable pair . The deceitful tongue is fed by 220 — its companion 284 (CHITTIM = AFFLICT = WOOD pair via EZR.10.32 = 220) marks the answering structure. The decode-pattern says: deceit lives inside an amicable pair; only its larger half can answer it.
Lock 3-A — FALSE TONGUE = 125 = VIOLENT MAN: This is the most loaded lock in the verse. The false tongue and the violent man are the same integer. and Psa 18's five-125 cluster (THICK CLOUDS, STATUTES, GAVE HIS VOICE, LORD LIVETH, VIOLENT MAN) sit here. The Aijeleth-Shahar superscription (Psa 22) = 125 also — the cross psalm itself shares the integer. The false tongue IS the violent man encoded.
Lock 3-B — THOU FALSE TONGUE = 189 = the soul-handshake: 189 is the Psa 86 v4/v13 handshake LIFT UP MY SOUL = DELIVERED MY SOUL, also Psa 22:20 DELIVER MY SOUL. The vocative against the false tongue IS the soul-lift integer. The act of naming the tongue is the act of lifting the soul. Two operations, one integer.
Lock 3-C — WHAT SHALL BE GIVEN = 168 = Psa 52 punishment vector: 168 is documented in psalm_decode_followups.md (Psa 52 — TAKE PLUCK ROOT = WAIT ON THY NAME = SON OF THE BLESSED). The verdict-question of v3 lands on Psa 52's verdict-integer. The Ascents-opener routes the tongue's judgment through Doeg's punishment template.
Lock 4-A — v4 is the only Tesla verse-sum: Verses 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 all sum non-Tesla. v4 (516) lands DR 3. Per the open hypothesis B4 in the followups doc (Tesla saturation flips at act-verses), v4 IS the divine-act verse — God's weapons against the tongue. Every other verse is preparation, complaint, or pivot; only the action breaks Tesla-positive.

Lock 4-C — BROOM TREE = MESECH AND KEDAR = 111: Modern English translates "juniper" as "broom tree" (1 Kgs 19:4-5, Elijah's broom). BROOM TREE = 111 = MESECH AND KEDAR = STAND READY = COMPUTER. The fuel of the coals (broom tree) is the same integer as the place of exile. Burning the broom-tree of Mesech-Kedar IS the divine response. The exile's vegetation IS its judgment-fire.
Lock 4-D — COALS OF JUNIPER = 164 = 4 × ABIHU: ABIHU = 41 ( — PAX6 = BLIND = ABIHU = 41, the strange-fire son of Aaron killed in Lev 10). 164 = 4 × 41 = strange-fire-fourfold = the four-corners contained burn. The juniper coals are bounded ABIHU fire — the strange fire reissued under cardinal-direction containment. The tongue's punishment is the strange-fire pattern, now controlled.
Lock 5-A — TENTS OF KEDAR = LIPS TONGUE = FROM A DECEITFUL = 138: The exile's residence (TENTS OF KEDAR) is built out of the same integer as the tongue-cluster the pilgrim flees. The geography IS the tongue. Living in Kedar = living in the tongue. The pilgrim is not in a place; the pilgrim is in a speech-act.
Lock 5-B — TENTS = ISSACHAR = BETHLEHEM = CRUCIFIED = 78: TENTS alone (78) equals the Issachar-tribe constitutional integer . Issachar dwelt in tents (Gen 49:14 — "couching down between two burdens"). The pilgrim's exile is Issachar's positioning — between two burdens (Mesech north, Kedar south). The tents IS the time-discernment tribe.
Lock 5-C — TENTS KEDAR = ON HIS HEART = PENTECOST = COMMUNION = 117: The two-word compression of the exile tent-name = the Pentecost integer. The exile dwelling and the Pentecost arrival share 117. The pilgrim's hostile environment is structurally a pre-Pentecost waiting room.
Lock 5-D — MESECH AND THE TENTS OF KEDAR = 243 = 3⁵: The full exile-string is 3 to the 5th — the maximally Tesla-saturated number under 256 with single-prime factorization. The exile sentence is pentadic-Tesla. The exile address itself is mathematically peace-positive. The complaint encodes its own resolution-frequency.

Lock 6-A — HATETH PEACE = I AM FOR PEACE = 92: The most quietly devastating lock in the psalm. HATETH PEACE (v6, the enemy's posture) = I AM FOR PEACE (v7, the pilgrim's posture) at the same integer. The two voices are integer-identical; only the verb-direction differs. The complaint isn't that the enemy is different — it's that the enemy is direction-reversed. The pilgrim and the peace-hater share the integer. This is a verb-direction-reversal handshake of the same type documented in Psa 55 / Psa 140 (boomerang mode).
Lock 6-B — HIM THAT HATETH PEACE = 171 = 9 × 19: 171 factors as Tesla-9 × ADAM-prime (ADAM = 19, the irreducible first-man integer). The peace-hater is "first-man nine-folded" — Adam's hatred at full Tesla saturation. The hate isn't external; it's the Genesis-3 cascade compounded.
Lock 6-C — THAT HATETH PEACE = JUNIPER TREE = 141: The peace-hater = the juniper tree. The same broom-tree under which the coals are heaped (v4) IS the peace-hater (v6). The judgment-fuel and the judgment-target share the integer. The peace-hater becomes the broom-tree-coals. Self-fulfillment.
Lock 7-A — the 92 verb-reversal across v6→v7: I AM FOR PEACE = HATETH PEACE = 92. This is the psalm's central engineering. The same integer carried in two opposite directions. The complaint is vector not value. See Section 6.
Lock 7-B — FOR WAR = ASCENTS = TABERNACLE = 81: The enemy declaration of war and the ascent itself share the integer. The pilgrim doesn't escape the war; the pilgrim converts the war into the climb. Songs-of-Ascents = enemy-declared-war, one integer, different verbs. This is why Psa 120 must open the collection: it's the start-of-the-game declaration, and the integer 81 says the ascent IS the war converted.
Lock 7-C — WHEN I SPEAK = MESECH AND KEDAR = 111: The act of speaking from exile and the exile-place-name share 111 = STAND READY = COMPUTER. To speak from Mesech-Kedar is to boot the ready-state. The complaint about speech-into-war is the boot-frame of the entire Ascents protocol.
I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.
This is the verse the whole psalm bends toward. Six verses of complaint set up one declaration: I am for peace. And the response: war. On the surface, futility. Underneath, the program's launch condition — the integer architecture says this is the start-button of the Ascents.
Lock 7-1 — the 92 verb-reversal handshake. I AM FOR PEACE = HATETH PEACE = 92 (DR 2). The pilgrim's declaration and the enemy's posture share the integer. This is the boomerang-mode mechanism documented in Psa 140: same integer, opposite verb-direction. The pilgrim doesn't dispute the value — only the vector. This is why the prayer-answer architecture works: God doesn't change the integer, only the verb. The complaint that "I am for peace but they are for war" is, at gematria layer, "I and they hold the same charge; only signs differ."
Lock 7-2 — FOR WAR = ASCENTS = 81. The enemy-declaration FOR WAR equals the superscription anchor ASCENTS at 81 = TABERNACLE = SILICON = GRACE OF GOD = CONFESS = MOURN = POWDER. The war IS the ascent, gematrically. The pilgrim doesn't escape war — the pilgrim climbs through it. Every step of the Songs of Ascents is a war-integer-direction-reversed. This is the Ascents protocol: take the enemy's 81 and walk it upward into the tabernacle's 81.
Lock 7-3 — WHEN I SPEAK = 111 = MESECH AND KEDAR = BROOM TREE = COMPUTER. The speech-act and the exile-address are integer-identical. To speak from exile IS to be in Mesech-and-Kedar. Speech doesn't free the pilgrim from exile; speech is the exile under another verb. But: 111 also = STAND READY = DAY OF BATTLE. The integer mark the exile-speech IS the ready-state. The complaint about being unable to speak peace IS the boot of the day-of-battle stance.
Lock 7-4 — PEACE WAR = WAR PEACE = STILL = 72. Commutativity is the lock. Peace-war and war-peace sum identically — there is no order-of-operations difference. Both = 72
Lock 7-5 — 409 prime full-verse sum. The complete pivot sentence sums to 409, prime, sealed. No factorization, no cluster match. The verse is its own sealed unit — irreducible. This matches the followups doc B5 observation about sealed primes at structural inflection points (Psa 140:10 RISE NOT UP = 137 prime; Psa 64:8 full-verse 907 prime). The verse where the pilgrim's stance becomes verbal is a sealed prime: speech turns the integer into a one-way function.
Lock 7-6 — WHEN I SPEAK THEY ARE FOR WAR = 274 = 2 × 137. 137 is the fine-structure constant prime (, Psa 140:10 RISE NOT UP). The post-speech reaction integer factors as 2 × the fine-structure prime — doubled fine-structure. The enemy's war-reaction is electron-coupling doubled: the physics constant that governs atomic stability, twofold. The pilgrim's speech triggers an atomic-stability-doubling response.
I am for peace (92 = your enemy's hate, direction reversed): but when I speak (111 = the exile-address that IS the boot-frame), they are for war (163 prime sealed, but FOR WAR alone = 81 = the ascent itself).
Translated through the locks: "I hold the same integer as those who hate peace, but in the opposite direction. The very act of my speaking puts me in the exile-as-ready-state, the boot-of-the-day-of-battle. Their declaration of war IS the tabernacle's grace-of-God under a different verb."
v7 is the program-launch. The pilgrim isn't lamenting; the pilgrim is receiving the entry-condition. War declared = ascent commenced = tabernacle assembly begun. Every Song of Ascents that follows (121-134) executes the integer-reversal of this entry condition.

The same integer carried in two opposite verb-directions. This is boomerang-mode (same-integer / different-words) per psalm_decode_followups.md A4. The problem isn't that the enemy holds a different integer; the problem is that the enemy holds the same integer in the wrong direction.
The psalm's complaint is not "they have what I don't" — it's "they have what I have, but pointed wrong." This is structurally identical to Psa 140's OVERTHROW boomerang (v4 attack vector / v11 verdict vector, same word, same integer, opposite vector).
Implication for the Ascents collection: if the entire 15-psalm climb is built off this v7 launch-condition, then every subsequent ascent-step is an integer-direction-correction. The pilgrim doesn't acquire new integers; the pilgrim reverses the verb on integers already held. Climbing = re-pointing.
The 81-cluster carries the structural backbone of this psalm and the entire Songs of Ascents:
The mechanism: the enemy's FOR WAR is the pilgrim's ASCENTS in disguise. The hostile declaration (v7) is the tabernacle (Ex 26-40) under a different verb. To climb the ascent is to convert FOR WAR (enemy declaration) into TABERNACLE (destination) by holding the integer 81 and walking the verb-direction from war-declaration to maintenance.
Psa 120 is the only Songs-of-Ascents psalm where this 81-conversion is named in the conflict itself. The other Ascents psalms execute the conversion; Psa 120 declares the entry.

Psalm 120 opens at v1 with 174. This is the first observed case of a major Davidic supplication appearing at v1 rather than the typical v6 cap-position. Followups B1 asked: "does every major Davidic supplication psalm carry 174 at v6?" Psa 120 partially answers: the Songs-of-Ascents opener moves the cap to v1, because the Ascents protocol requires the cap to be the launch-frequency, not the mid-prayer crescendo.
What this means: the entire Ascents climb (Psa 120-134) begins with the highest-answering integer already declared. The 15-psalm sequence is then the step-down: 174 → ... → arrival. The pilgrim doesn't reach the cap by climbing; the pilgrim starts at the cap and walks down into the tabernacle through 14 corrective verb-direction reversals.

This is inverted from the typical Davidic supplication shape, which walks up to the cap. Songs-of-Ascents opener inverts the lament-shape — start high, land at the boot.
The v6→v7 handshake at 92 is the central engineering (Section 6). The chapter-number lock at 120 (5-way) is the holographic seal — encoded only by re-composition of psalm elements (SOUL IN PEACE = 120).
